However, it is clear to us that many of the general public are unaware of the existence of let alone the danger of micro-plastics.

Thus, we are here to outline what micro-plastics are, up to date research on their damaging effect on our health and how you can combat micro-plastics within your home.

First Things First, what are Micro-Plastics?

Micro-plastics are small pieces of plastic (less than five millimetres long) which can be harmful to not only our ocean and aquatic life but to our personal health. Micro-plastics are formed when plastics break apart into tiny beads.

This means that when you buy single use, non-biodegradable plastic, it will break down into micro-plastics that cannot be removed by most filters or waste water treatment as they are too small. These micro-plastics then create a multitude of problems in the environment, and when ingested by humans can wreak havoc on our health.

Recent Research Reveals – Micro-Plastics found in Placenta’s of Unborn Babies!

The Guardian recently published an article detailing a study that revealed micro-plastic particles had been found in the placentas of unborn babies, which the researchers said was “a matter of great concern”.

The health impact of micro-plastics in the human body is as yet unknown. However, scientists said they could carry chemicals that could cause long-term damage to the foetus developing, their  immune system or could lead to reduced foetal growth.

The particles were consumed or breathed in by the mothers. All the particles analysed were plastics that had been dyed blue, red, orange or pink and may have originally come from packaging, paints or cosmetics and personal care products.

The micro-plastics were 0.01mm, meaning they are small enough to be carried in the bloodstream. The particles may have entered the babies’ bodies, but the researchers were unable to assess this.

Antonio Ragusa, director of obstetrics and gynaecology at the San Giovanni Calibita Fatebenefratelli hospital in Rome, and who led the study stated thatIt is like having a cyborg baby: no longer composed only of human cells, but a mixture of biological and inorganic entities.” The mothers were said to be shocked and horrified.

In the study, published in the journal Environment International, the researchers concluded: “Due to the crucial role of placenta in supporting the foetus’s development and in acting as an interface with the external environment, the presence of potentially harmful micro-plastic particles is a matter of great concern. Further studies need to be performed to assess if the presence of micro-plastics may trigger immune responses or may lead to the release of toxic contaminants, resulting in harm.”

Elizabeth Salter Green, at the chemicals charity Chem Trust, said: “Babies are being born pre-polluted. The study was very small but nevertheless flags a very worrying concern.”

How does Plastic Damage our Health and that of many Animals Species?

There remains to this day immense uncertainty and concern that micro-plastics could have detrimental long term health effects on humans and animals.

However, the worrying statistics speak for themselves, as researchers determined that people and animals are at risk for ingesting around 5 grams of plastic per week – equivalent to eating a credit card!

The newest issue of the journal Environmental Science and Technology, reported that Americans consume an estimated 39,000 to 52,000 micro-plastic particles per year. Moreover, those who rely on bottled water might be ingesting 90,000 more micro-plastic particles per year on average than those who drink only tap water.

Furthermore recent studies suggest that the chemical Bisphenol A (found in in plastic containers and water bottles, till receipts, on the inside of cans and bottle tops and micro-plastics), could be contributing to the deceased sperm count and infertility in young men; as a study showed that sperm counts went from 99 million sperm per milliliter of semen in 1973 to 47 million per milliliter in 2011, and the decline has been accelerating.

Therefore, it would seem that micro-plastics are affecting our health and that of animals in a myriad of ways, therefore it is in our best interest to arm ourselves against this enemy with top of the range, effective water filters.

Plastic is killing wildlife!

How does Plastic affect Our Environment & Biosphere?

Moreover, micro-plastics emit and absorb chemicals and harmful pollutants.

Micro-plastics eventually make their way into the sea, where they spread throughout the oceans, polluting the water and poisoning many sea creatures.

Tragically, aquatic life mistakes the micro-plastics for food, ingesting them and dying due to the toxic nature of these micro-plastics.

Is it is our solemn duty to protect our planet and the vulnerable wildlife within it from these harmful micro-plastics.
