Microplastics found in Placenta’s of Unborn Babies!
The Guardian recently published an article detailing a study that revealed microplastic particles had been found in the placentas of unborn babies, which the researchers said was “a matter of great concern.”
The health impact of microplastics in the human body is yet unknown. However, scientists said they could carry chemicals that could cause long-term damage to the foetus’s developing immune system or could lead to reduced foetal growth.
The particles were consumed or breathed in by the mothers. The microplastics were 0.01mm, meaning they are small enough to be carried in the bloodstream. The particles may have entered the babies’ bodies, but the researchers were unable to assess this.
Antonio Ragusa, director of obstetrics and gynaecology at the San Giovanni Calibita Fatebenefratelli hospital in Rome, and who led the study stated that “It is like having a cyborg baby: no longer composed only of human cells, but a mixture of biological and inorganic entities.”
While Elizabeth Salter Green, at the chemicals charity Chem Trust, said: “Babies are being born pre-polluted.”
This is of course a shocking and horrifying discovery.
But luckily help is at hand.
Our filters remove plastics larger than 10 microns (0.01mm) so they are guaranteed to catch almost all microplastics, meaning you will be safer from the adverse long-term health effects of microplastic.
ZeroWater filter jugs reduce the amount of microplastics in YOUR water. So, protect yourself and your family from these damaging microplastics by investing in a ZeroWater filter jug!
Put a Stopper in the Copper found in Your Tap Water!
The most common culprit for increased Copper levels is due to many pipes being made from copper that corrode and this corrosion can seeps into your drinking water.
Too much copper in the water can affect its taste quality and safety as an excess amount of copper ingested can cause health problems. It is therefore important to be aware, vigilant and take precautions against this contaminant.
Consumption of high levels of copper can cause adverse health effects such as:
- Gastric irritation
- Long term exposure over months and years can cause liver damage.
- It has also been suggested that infants may be particularly susceptible to liver toxicity as a result of exposure to high copper levels in water.
Lead Pipes are Poisoning Our Water Supply
Many older water pipes (those made and installed before 1970) were made from lead, so lots of properties in the UK contain lead piping. These pipes serve to deliver the mains water supply into and around the house. As these pipes age and corrode Lead can seep into and contaminate your tap water.
If enough lead builds up in the body over time due to ingestion of lead contaminated water, you could suffer from lead poisoning. The brain is particularly vulnerable to lead poisoning as the lead interferes with the normal development, therefore, those most at risk are infants and children as it leads to and has a harmful impact on their mental development as they grow up.
As the lead builds up in the body you can experience adverse symptoms such as:
- Abdominal pain
- Muscle pain
- A loss of appetite
These effects can vary from minor to sever depending on the concentration of lead in your water. You need to protect yourself and your children from the health risks of lead in your drinking water.
Mercury is a Major Public Health Concern
Mercury can be extremely poisonous, and we can absorb it by touch, inhalation, or consumption. It builds up in the body with each exposure and is very difficult to remove. If too much builds up within you, you can suffer from mercury poisoning, which can be potentially fatal.
All forms of mercury are toxic to humans, but methylmercury is of great concern because our bodies have a less well-developed defence mechanism against this toxin.
Foetuses are most susceptible to developmental effects due to mercury. Methylmercury exposure in the womb can result from a mother’s consumption of contaminated fish or water. It can adversely affect a baby’s growing brain and nervous system.
The primary health effect of methylmercury is impaired neurological development. Therefore, cognitive thinking, memory, attention, language, and fine motor visual spatial skills may be affected in children who were exposed to methylmercury as foetuses.
Elemental and methylmercury are toxic to the central and peripheral nervous systems. Moreover, mercury has toxic effects on the nervous, digestive, and immune systems, and on lungs, kidneys, skin and eyes. Neurological and behavioural disorders may be observed after inhalation, ingestion, or dermal exposure of different mercury compounds.
- Memory loss
- Neuromuscular effects
- Cognitive and motor dysfunction
However, you can reduce the dangerous levels of mercury in your tap water with the help of ZeroWater filters.
Asbestos IS Present in Our Tap Water
The major sources of asbestos in drinking water are: the decay of asbestos cement water mains and the erosion of natural deposits.
20% of people in England and Wales drink water that has flowed through asbestos cement pipes and worryingly, the 37,000km of asbestos cement piping laid in Britain is now coming to the end of its 50–70-year lifespan.
It is an accepted fact that the release of asbestos fibres into the water supply increases as pipes age and deteriorate — and spikes when they burst. And yet there are no UK guidelines as to when asbestos fibre levels in the water may be considered a health threat, but their levels in drinking water are not routinely tested. In fact, the government has not investigated the issue for decades!
However, asbestos is very poisonous and can cause various dangerous diseases. These diseases can manifest themselves decades after the exposure.
- Asbestosis: This is a condition in which there are accumulations of connective tissue. This leads to a decrease in lung capacity, which means that the heart has to work harder and become overloaded.
- Lung cancer: There is uninhibited cell growth in the lungs’ tissues, a so-called tumour, or carcinoma. It can also spread to nearby tissues and other body parts.
- Fibrosis: Too much connective tissue forms in organs or other tissues in fibrosis.
- Mesothelioma: This is a type of cancer of the lung, peritoneum, or pericardium.
Therefore, we must protect ourselves and our loved ones from the awful effects of asbestos exposure from our contaminated drinking water.
